Why Does Your Bed Squeak? Common Causes and How to Fix It
Your day is finally over and you’ve now finally settled onto your bed. You found a comfortable position and started drifting off, but then you turn over, and that familiar squeak breaks the silence. Sound familiar?
It can be frustrating to have a squeaky bed but it does not necessarily mean you need a replacement for your bed. Sometimes, the noise is often caused by a loose fixing or a headboard rubbing against the wall. To stop your bed from squeaking when you move or sit on it, start with a few simple checks.
Find out where the noise is coming from
Before you reach for your tools, find out which part of the bed is making the sound. It is possible that your bed frame, mattress, headboard or even the floor is responsible for the squeaking sound.
If you are able to safely remove the mattress, gently press different parts of the base and frame. Make sure to check the corners, centre support and headboard connections for any sound. After you’re done, test the mattress separately. This helps you avoid replacing a perfectly good mattress when the real problem is actually underneath it.
Check loose bolts and connections
Everyday movements often cause fixings to loosen up, resulting in the connected parts moving against each other.
Follow the assembly instructions of your bed and make sure to check for accessible bolts, screws and brackets. Tighten the loose fixings carefully using the correct tool, but just make sure that you do not overtighten them.
For upholstered bed frames, check the accessible bolts and connections rather than assuming that the padded finish will help prevent the noise. On divan beds, make sure to check that the base sections are properly joined and the headboard fixings are secure.
Look at the slats and support legs
It’s possible that a squeaky bed frame may have a slat that has shifted out of position or a support leg that isn’t sitting firmly on the floor.
Check to make sure that the slats are seated correctly in their holders and look for cracks or damaged fittings. Make sure the centre support is installed as instructed and try to avoid any improvising repairs to broken load-bearing parts; instead, ask the retailer about suitable replacements.
Also check whether your bed stands evenly. An uneven floor can make the frame wobble or twist, creating noise whenever you move.
Check your ottoman storage bed
If you have an ottoman storage bed, try to notice when the noise occurs. Does it squeak while you’re sleeping or only when you open the storage compartment?
Use the instructions to check accessible frame connections of the bed. If the sound comes from the lifting mechanism, contact the supplier for advice. Don’t loosen gas struts or apply lubricant without asking for the manufacturer’s guidance.
A king size ottoman bed or small double ottoman bed still needs correct assembly and suitable mattress support just like any other bed.
Know when it’s time for a replacement
If the frame rocks, joints repeatedly loosen or structural parts are damaged, further tightening may not really solve the problem.
Look beyond the appearance of a bed when you choose a replacement. Check the construction, support system, mattress compatibility and assembly requirements instead. A solid-base divan or an upholstered bed with well-fitted supports may suit your needs, but know that no design is automatically squeak-proof.
Dreamland Bedz offers upholstered beds, divan beds and ottoman storage options to suit different bedrooms. Start with the simple checks above; if replacement becomes necessary, choose a bed that fits both your room and your mattress.
Frequently Asked Questions
Loose fixings, rubbing joints or slats that have shifted can cause squeaking when you turn over. A loose headboard, uneven floor or worn mattress springs may also be responsible. Finding where the sound comes from is the first step.
Check accessible bolts and connections, make sure the headboard is secure and inspect the slats and support legs. Follow your bed’s assembly instructions and tighten loose fixings carefully. If you find damaged parts, contact the supplier rather than trying to patch them up.
If you can safely remove the mattress, test it separately from the frame. Gently press different areas of the mattress, then check the frame and base. This can help you identify which part makes the noise.
A new bed may squeak if a fixing is loose, a slat is incorrectly fitted or a support leg isn’t resting properly on the floor. Check the assembly instructions first. If the noise continues, contact the retailer, especially if the frame feels unstable.
Check that any separate base sections are securely connected, the feet or castors are correctly fitted and the headboard fixings are tight. Make sure the base sits evenly on the floor. If the sound comes from inside the base, ask the supplier for advice.
The noise may come from the hinges, lifting mechanism or frame connections. Note where it happens and check the manufacturer’s guidance. Don’t loosen gas struts or apply lubricant unless the manufacturer recommends it.
A squeak alone doesn’t mean you need a new frame. Loose fixings may be easy to resolve. However, cracked supports, damaged joints or persistent wobbling need attention. Contact the supplier to find out whether replacement parts or a new frame are needed.
